Construction Project Management Certificate

Our Construction Project Management Certificate comprises a series of Canadian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (CIQS) accredited courses that provide you with the skills and knowledge needed to manage construction projects. Courses meet industry standards and are integrated to cover the bidding process, estimating, scheduling, contract administration, and cost control procedures and systems.

Compulsory Courses

COMPULSORY COURSES (SIX)

Through our Construction Administration course, focus on the rights and obligations of the parties under a standard construction contract. Examine the practical application of clauses related to instructions, changes, progress payments, holdbacks and completion certificates.

Through our Construction Control course, learn to use an effective cost control system to achieve the estimated profit on projects and to monitor and predict results. Explore the techniques used to control construction costs, with an emphasis on internal communications, accurate feedback and the various uses of costing data.

Explore quantity surveying and estimating with our Construction Estimating I course, including the critical role of the quantity surveyor/estimator in the tendering or bidding process. Learn the general principles and rules used to measure and cost construction work, and explore estimating with electronic spreadsheets.

PREREQUISITE(S)

You must know how to read construction drawings and be familiar with construction materials and methodologies, and you must be skilled in Microsoft Excel and have an aptitude for basic mathematical calculations.

Learn the principles and methods used in the manual preparation of quantity takeoff and bidding for residential construction with our Construction Estimating II course.

Our Construction Planning and Scheduling course introduces project planning and scheduling, including the various types of schedules used in the construction industry. The focus is on the sequencing of operations in a construction project and the effective use of schedules created with a work breakdown structure.

Learn the principles of and best practices in managing construction projects from inception to project close out. Through our Construction Project Management course, focus on current industry practices related to the procurement of design services and contractors, contract methods and managing the construction contract process.

Expand your estimating and cost planning knowledge with our Building Economics - Development course. Learn the fundamentals of outline specifications and preliminary estimating in relation to feasibility studies for construction projects. Analyze financing arrangements and life-cycle costing associated with the economics of development.

  • This is a Canadian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (CIQS) accredited course (subject #309) and a Gold Seal accredited course (7 credits).
  • This is an online course. Please ensure you are familiar with the basic technology requirements for online courses.
  • You must also have the Construction Budgeting textbook in time for the first class. The book is available for purchase at the George Brown College bookstore (either on campus or online) or at the CIQS website.

Build on your construction estimating knowledge through our Cost Planning course. Learn cost planning and control in relation to the cycle of a construction project. Examine the various types of conceptual estimating, including a standardized approach to elemental cost estimating and analysis.

Our Part 9 - The House - Building Envelope course deals with construction of houses as single detached dwellings under Division B – Part 9 of the Ontario Building Code. Topics covered include building inspectors, plans, building permits and site plans; construction of foundations; floors-on-ground; reinforced concrete slabs; roofs and ceilings; and floors and walls, including brick veneer.

NOTE(S)

  • This is an online course. Please ensure you are familiar with the basic technology requirements for online courses.
  • You must have a copy of the 2012 Building Code Compendium before you begin this course. The compendium is available for purchase at the George Brown College bookstore (either on campus or online) or at the ServiceOntario Publications website.

You must have a basic understanding of building construction processes and materials and blueprint reading.

Through our Project Management Professional (PMP®) Exam Preparation course, acquire the project management training required to become PMP® certified. Created in partnership with threeO Project Solutions, this online project management training course provides everything you need to succeed, including an electronic training manual, lectures, tests, practice exams, an exam results analyzer and audio/video learning tools.

NOTE(S)

This is an online course, and registration is offered through continuous intake (meaning registration is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week throughout the year). Register in the section (CRN) with the Date(s) range that includes the date on which you plan to start the course (keeping in mind that you will receive your course details approximately a week after you register). You have 120 calendar days from the day you receive the course details to complete the course. Please ensure you are familiar with the basic technology requirements for online courses. You will also be required to provide your own Microsoft Word, Excel and Access software as these are critical for the AceIt software used in this course. (AceIt is not compatible with Macintosh computers.) This course provides 35 hours of project management education but does not represent the extent of the PMP® designation requirements. The qualification requirements are set by the Project Management Institute (PMI®), not George Brown College. In order to qualify for the PMP® designation, you must follow the process listed on the PMI website and meet the requirements applicable to you. You will receive a record of achievement if you complete this course with an overall grade average of B- (70%) or better. (PMP and PMI are registered marks of the Project Management Institute, Inc.).
